Tabasamu Watoto Inclusive Centre (TWIC)
lays the foundation for students to acquire the skills and abilities needed for intellectual growth to achieve success in school and daily life.

Who We Serve: The all-inclusive classes serve students ages 3 to 18, and to date, 186 students have benefited from this initiative; among these are 18 students with special needs.  72 currently attend the kindergarten program, and 113 have graduated and moved on to attend their local school. Additionally, TWIC visits families, school, and communities to provide guidance on how to support students with special needs and/or disabilities.  We deliver information on the potential impairments associated with certain conditions, such as self-care, communication, social interaction and independent living.

Special Needs Workshops: We're seeing God working in our community through the love and care we're showing the families we serve.  We're having our annual Special Needs Workshop coming up in July. We're happy to have begun Individual Education Plans (IEP's) for all our children with special needs. We’re also glad to see 12 children join grade 1 and know that we laid a good foundation for them. We're happy to be working on Individualized Educational Plans (IEP's) for four children with special needs. We have gone through the screening process and now working on assessment, setting objectives for each child and working on each objective to help improve the functioning of each child.  It is good to see improvements made by both students and teachers towards having an inclusive set-up.

Project Updates for 2021:
  • More than 150 teenage boys and girls benefited from our program
  • A foster home for 5 siblings was completed and all the children are going to school and their basic needs met. They are so much grateful to leave Kibera slums, a place that was full of difficulties
  • Our monthly online teacher training has gone well throughout the year. Many thanks to Exceptional Connections International, HTLOT and Hope Church
  • Bathrooms: Previously, we had only 2 pit latrines. Currently we have 9 flushable toilets
  • 2nd story building: Currently being used as a resource room for special needs learners equipped with educational materials

Special Stories:
  • Roslyn: Roslyn is a 13 year old girl who lives with her mom, stepfather and two siblings (a step-brother and a step-sister). Her stepfather is an abusive alcoholic. Her mother depends on this man to provide for her as her past has been a very rough one. For so many years Roslyn hasn’t been able to attend school. We have worked so hard to get a sponsor for Roslyn and have been supporting her family with food from time to time. As a result, we have seen a lot of changes in Roslyn, her mom and stepfather. This we have showed the love of God and we hope for change in this family in the near future – both physical and spiritual change.
Needs & Opportunities
  • Continues financial support (increase of monthly support if possible).

Prayers:

Historical Updates

May:  We thank God for the beginning of our second term. We are happy to welcome all our children back to School. For the next 3 months, Carol and Dennis will be training business groups from Kibera on some critical topics (Proposal Writing, Leadership, marketing, etc.). We will be training 21 leaders and do professional developments with them over the period of three months, and they will pass the skills to their members who are 430 in total. We thank God for the provision of shoes for all our children. This could not have happened if it were not with the help of Edward of HTLOT Nairobi.
